The Hanley Machine Tools HMT-T2 is a dual dial-indicator tramming gauge for setting the tram level of a CNC spindle or cutting head square to the machine bed. It is held in the spindle toolholder, so the machine itself does not have to be moved to set the tram.
What tram is, and why it matters. A machine spindle is not mounted square to the bed - it sits at a small angle, called the tram. Left uncorrected that angle makes every cut deeper at one corner of the workpiece than the other, so a job that should be a 10 mm face comes out 10.2 mm at one end. Tramming squares the spindle up to the bed and removes the error; this gauge measures that error directly with two dial indicators instead of by eye.
Two dial indicators, fitted. The gauge carries two metric dial test indicators with a 0-5 mm range and 0.01 mm graduations, mounted 100 mm apart between the dial centres. Two dials are used so the height difference across the spindle can be read at both ends and squared off, rather than at a single point. The dials are calibrated metric, accurate to 0.01 mm.
Two shank sizes supplied. The gauge is supplied with two interchangeable stainless steel shanks - 1/4 in (6.35 mm) and 1/2 in (12.7 mm) - so it can be held in the toolholder bores used by most spindle arrangements without a separate adapter. Check the bore your machine's toolholder takes before ordering.
